Baranovichi - is a city of Brest region of Belarus, an administrative center of Baranovichi district. The main attraction of the city of Baranovichi is the Orthodox Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary, which was built from 1924 to 1931 in the neoclassical style. Today, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary in Baranovichi is the oldest Orthodox church in the city. The cathedral was built on the site of the wooden church burnt down in 1921. In 1924, the laying of the first stone in the foundation of the new church was consecrated, in 1928 the solemn installation of domes on the church took place, and in 1931 the cathedral was solemnly consecrated.
The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary in Baranovichi is decorated with mosaic compositions of special value. In total, seven unique panels are used in the decoration of the temple. Five of these mosaic compositions adorn the interior of the temple, well, the remaining two mosaics are located outside on the building pediments. These mosaic panels once decorated the Warsaw Orthodox Cathedral. They were made on the basis of works by famous Russian artists at the beginning of the 20th century in St. Petersburg. Then they were placed on the walls of the Warsaw Cathedral, which was opened in 1912. Upon completion, the cathedral reached a height of 70 meters and was at that time the tallest building in Warsaw.
The Orthodox Cathedral was destroyed by the Polish authorities in the mid-1920s. The main reason for the demolition was that the cathedral, which occupied one of the main squares of Warsaw, symbolized the period of Russian domination over Poland that was difficult for the Poles. The temple was dismantled for several years, while all the values that could be saved were transferred to the Orthodox Church and sent to Western Belarus, which then was part of Poland. As a result, unique mosaic panels, like many other church values and objects of art, were delivered to Baranovichi in 1926-28, where they were subsequently used in the construction of a new church.
By the way, the construction of the Baranovichi Cathedral was largely funded by the Polish government. Unfortunately, not all fragments of these unique mosaics could be re-folded into a single pattern in Baranovichi. Unused fragments of mosaics are still stored in the dungeons of the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary in Baranovichi. To date, experts call the mosaic composition of the Baranovichi Church one of the best examples of mosaic art from the beginning of the 20th century. Also of interest is the iconostasis of the Baranovichi Cathedral, which was brought from the chapel of the Warsaw Royal Castle, and today is considered one of the most valuable in Belarus.
In 1949, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary in Baranovichi became the only active Orthodox church in the city. However, the unique mosaics that adorn this temple contributed to the fact that already in 1953 Baranovichi Cathedral was included in the list of architectural monuments protected by the state.
