House-museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP in Minsk - is a typical residential house of the late 19th century, located on the bank of the Svislach River, where the first congress of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP) was held from March 1-3, 1898. This historical event was held illegally under the guise of celebrating the birthday. Nine delegates attended the congress. The congress did not work out a program or a party charter. In a few weeks all the participants of the congress, except one, were arrested - thus, a really functioning party was not created at this congress. However, the manifesto and decisions of the Congress, printed in a separate leaflet in April 1898 in the Babrujsk underground printing press, were perceived by the revolutionary Social Democrats of Russia as documents of historical importance and were approved by Lenin.
After the congress, the Social Democratic organizations and unions adopted the name of the RSDLP committees. And the days of the congress in Minsk are still considered the moment of the founding of the corresponding party. To date, the house of the first congress of the RSDLP is a museum. This museum is a branch of the National Museum of History and Culture of Belarus. In the house of the first congress of the RSDLP the museum was founded in 1923. The opening of the museum was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first congress of the RSDLP and the founding of this party. It is noteworthy that since the first congress of the RSDLP was held only in one half of this house, initially the museum was organized only in that half. And the second half of the house remained residential right up to the Second World War, during which the whole house-museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP burned down during the bombing. However, already in 1948 it was completely restored. At the moment, the house-museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP is located in the very center of Minsk, on its main avenue. The house-museum is surrounded by a small square, which somewhat isolates it from the rustling city nearby.
The current permanent exhibition of the museum presents the themes: "Minsk in the late 19th - early 20th century", "Congress in the faces", "Gendarmer's detective" and "History of the House-museum of the First Congress of the RSDLP". The museum also hosts some additional events, exhibitions, master classes. But under the Soviet government, the museum held a lot of different party events: pioneer and komsomol rallies, the delivery of komsomol tickets and awards, meetings with veterans of the party and so on. In those days, the house-museum was visited by up to 500 thousand people a year, and in our time visitors in the museum is extremely small. Nevertheless, it is necessary to mention that this architectural monument represents a reliable historical fact. And despite the fact that there are very different, sometimes contradictory assessments and opinions on the events that were initiated by the first congress held in this house and the organization formed in its course, it is impossible to deny that these events had a colossal significance for the destinies of many peoples. And it is for this reason that this building is a very important historical monument.
